Weekend on Vlieland

Things to do, food and drink around the Vuurtorenloop

The Vuurtorenloop is always on Sunday, but Vlieland has far more to offer than just the race. Beach, dunes, forest, the Wadden Sea and a village with more terraces than you can get through in one day. Below are our tips for a complete race weekend. Detailed information, current times and bookings can be found at visitvlieland.nl.

What your weekend looks like

Friday — arrive and acclimatise

Catch the boat, drop your bags at your accommodation and head into the village. A stroll along the Dorpsstraat, a beer on a terrace and a light meal. Take a look at the finish near the village, so you know on Sunday what you're running for.

Saturday — explore and prepare

Take it easy and explore the island: beach, forest or a bike ride. Eat early and get to bed on time — tomorrow's the day.

Sunday — Mooi zwaar!

The Vuurtorenloop is always on Sunday. From 10:00 you collect your race number at Sportcentrum Flidunen, then it's beach, dune and the lighthouse, and in the evening a warm shower, a good meal and the celebrations. Vlieland knows how to party, and by then you'll already have a medal round your neck.

Practical weekend tips

  • Book the ferry and your accommodation early: a race weekend is busy on the island.
  • Cars are not allowed on Vlieland. Hire a bike on arrival — ideal for the weekend.
  • Book ahead for Sunday dinner; with hundreds of runners, places fill up fast.
  • Bring warm, dry clothing. After the beach it's always chillier on the coast than you'd expect.
  • Plan activities for Friday and Saturday: Sunday belongs to the race.
