Running on Vlieland

Beach, dune, forest and the lighthouse

Vlieland is arguably the most beautiful running island in the Netherlands: hardly any cars, over twelve kilometres of beach, dune forests, shell paths and the Vuurboetsduin as the only real climb. Whether you're training here on holiday or taking on a race, you'll always run with the sea wind in your face.

The Vlieland running race

Once a year the island turns into a running festival: the Vuurtorenloop Vlieland on Sunday 18 April 2027. Choose from a half marathon (21.1 km), 10 km, 5 km or the youth run. The event's slogan and DNA: beautifully tough.

Registration opens 17 October 2026

Where can you run on Vlieland?

  • The beach — runnable at low tide from the Vliehors to the North Sea beach by the village. Tough, flat and seemingly endless.
  • The Vuurboetsduin — the climb to the lighthouse, the only place on the island where you gain real elevation.
  • The forest around Flidunen — sheltered paths, ideal in strong winds and the loop used for the youth run.
  • Shell paths and cycle paths — from the village towards the Kroonspolders, quiet and gently rolling.

Tips for running on the island

  • Check the tide times: at high tide the beach is narrow and heavy going.
  • Expect wind — run out into the wind, and let it carry you back.
  • Wear lightweight shoes with grip for sand and shell paths.
  • Stay out of the closed-off breeding areas in spring.
